Howard W. Knoebel


Howard, born in 1922, is a retired professor from the University of Illinois, College of Engineering. He received his amateur radio license, W9MBD, in 1940. Beside electronics and computers, he is interested in mechanical engineering, construction, machine shop, woodworking and dogs (Beagles). He built his own 120 foot tower in 1994. He erected a 190 foot Rohn 45G and a 100 foot Rohn 5N self-supporting tower in 1997.

Shown here is the home built tower, 120 feet tall. Not shown is a 190 foot Rohn 45G tower for the W9MBD repeater on 444.925 with a PL tone of 103.5 located five miles west and a mile south of Toledo, Illinois, road 600N, 675E, grid square EM-59-TG, 39deg15'27"N latitude, 88deg20'49"W longitude.

On November 3, 1997, the repeater was moved to the 100 foot Rohn self-supporting tower located at the highest point in three counties, just south of Mattoon, Illinois at 39deg26'27.5"N latitude, 88deg20'14.8"W longitude. This tower reaches 66 feet higher than the 200 foot tower.

W9MBD operates single sideband on most high frequencies and operates FM and packet on 70 cm and 2 meters. Packet baud rates are 9600 on 70 cm and 1200 on 2 meters.
