What is Postini?
Postini is a junk email and virus filtering service. Before your email reaches your computer it is checked against a list of known viruses and junk mail. Postini will quarantine suspicious messages in your message center until you can review them and decide what you want to do with them.

Will there be any extra charges to use Postini?
Cumberland Internet provides this service at no extra charge to subscribers. Cumberland Internet does have to pay Postini, but we have chosen to offer this service free of charge to you.

Do I still need Anti-Virus software now that I have Postini?
It is still very important to keep your anti-virus software active and your virus definitions up to date .  Postini will filter out viruses from most email sources, but mail from one Cumberland Internet subscriber to another doesn't pass through Postini's filters.  So, you still need your anti-virus software to protect you.

Can I choose not to have my email filtered by Postini?
Postini's junk email filters are completely controlled by you. It's important that you log into Postini frequently initially.  As you choose what to deliver to your mailbox and what to delete, you also start adding to your approved and blocked senders lists.  You can also go into the filter setting and change the preferences.  As you do this Postini starts adapting to your choices and starts to filter less and less legitimate email.

You do have the ability to turn off the junk mail filter if you choose to do so. Just log into the Postini Message Center.  Click on the "Junk Email" link towards the upper left of the screen.  On this screen, you can adjust your preferences or click the "Off" button to disable junk mail filtering.  Virus filtering is on my default and can not be disabled.

How do I add my mailing list to my Postini approved senders list?
Put a checkmark beside one of the mailing list messages that Postini has quarantined in your message center and click the "Deliver" button. You will be take to a screen that asks if you want to add this address to your list of approved senders.  The instructions will say to click on the highlighted link if this is from a mailing list. Follow the link and it will pull up the To: and the From:  Put a checkmark next to the appropriate field that reflects how your mailing list sends it's messages.  This will frequently be the To: field as opposed to the From: field.

Will Postini slow down my email?
No. Your email passes through Postini's filters before it reaches Cumberland Internet's mail server.  As a result, there is no change in the path that mail follows from our server to your computer.

What is my Postini password?
You log onto Postini using the same password that you always use to log onto the Internet.

What if I forget my password?
You can email or call Cumberland Internet to arrange to change your password.  For security reasons, we may not change it over the phone, or we may require some sort of verification before we will change a password. Remember that if you change your Cumberland Internet password, that you will need to change it in your email account settings.

How long will Postini hold my email?
Mail left in the message center will automatically be deleted after 14 days.

What happens when Postini quarantines an email with a virus?
When someone who is not a Cumberland Internet subscriber sends you an email infected with a virus, Postini will quarantine it in your message center.  You will receive an email notifying you that it is being held. The email will include the sender, the subject and which virus it is infected with.  You can log onto the message center and view the body of the email without getting infected by the virus. You will not be able to open any files attached to the email.  After reading the message, you can delete it.
